It was almost dark outside when the service began. Every window in the church held three candles and there were candles blazing everywhere. The front of the sanctuary was decked out with autumn colored flowers. The church looked warm and homey. Tim and Jason were waiting at the altar with Mary Bailey, who had on a festive clergy stole of white and gold.
Monica had a simple formal-cut gown of light blue with a matching hat. As man-of-honor I walked her down the aisle and passed her off to Jason. Tim and I stepped to one side. Iâm not easily moved, but the service was lovely, and two very important people in my life were getting married. I admit that I shed tear or two.
It all seemed to happen quickly and before I knew it we were all heading down to the parish hall for the reception. Monicaâs two sons, Jeremy and Joshua, moved up the reception line to meet me. Though Monica and I were close growing up, we had rarely corresponded as young adults, so I hadnât seen the boys since they were babies.
âItâs nice to finally meet you Uncle Jesse,â said Jeremy. âIâve heard a lot about you.â
âItâs good to meet you too,â I said. I didnât point out that we were really second cousins, since it didnât much matter.
âUncle Jesse, we heard all the stories of you and mom growing up in a family that talked to ghosts,â babbled Joshua when he met me. âIt sounds really cool!â I really had a hard time telling them apart.
âSo,â I said to both of them, âwhat do you think of Jason?â
âI think theyâre great together, just look at them over there!â said one of them.
âShe looks very happy, doesnât she?â asked the other one. I had to admit they both looked very happy. Just them Tim walked by with a plate of food.
âGreat spread! I like the meatballs,â he said.
âActually theyâre veggie balls,â I replied.
I grabbed some food and circulated around the room before sitting down at the head table with Tim and the newlyweds. Fortunately we skipped the speeches and toasts and simply ate and chatted. It was very informal and comfortable. Monica and Jason did cut the cake and there was a photographer discretely running around, but all and all it was enjoyable and relaxing.
âBy the way,â said Tim as he leaned over to me, âkeep the tuxedo on until I get home.â I was about to ask him why, but when I saw the look in his eye, I figured out why,
âNo problem,â I answered.
